The Research: Why ACT Works
40+ years of evidence-based psychology
What Is ACT?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) was developed by Dr. Steven Hayes in the 1980s. It's one of the most researched psychological interventions, with over 1,000 randomized controlled trials showing effectiveness across anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and more.
Unlike traditional CBT (which tries to change thoughts), ACT teaches psychological flexibilityβ the ability to be present, open to experience, and take action guided by values even when uncomfortable.

Why Wabi-Sabi as the Method?
ACT's core insightβstop fighting reality, start living your valuesβis the essence of Wabi-Sabi. This 16th-century Japanese aesthetic captures psychological flexibility in visual form:
| ACT Concept | Wabi-Sabi Principle |
|---|---|
| Acceptance | Embracing imperfection |
| Defusion | Observing thoughts like weathering wood |
| Present Moment | Honoring impermanence |
| Self-as-Context | The unchanging observer amid change |
| Values | Essence over ornament |
